OK, so my initial posts were a bit premature. I totally thought the Tuesday With Dorie – Baking with Julia adventure was starting in January. I was off about 3 weeks. Darn, rookie move on my part for sure! It’s just that 1) I was excited to bake and 2) I had a new blog that I wanted to test out and 3) I am learning about this whole big world of blogging and am clueless. Everyone’s blogs are so gorgeous! They have buttons, pictures, links and tons of cool things that I don’t even know what they are. Did I mention I was clueless? It’s definitely a work in progress, both the baking and the blogging and I am so glad to be learning both, though doing them at the same time has been a bit crazy! The journey of a thousand miles starts with… That’s right, these are my first steps. Hold on tight, it might be a bumpy ride for a while
Nothing like a little snow to keep a girl from getting anything done! Here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we are on our 2nd Snow Day! This is a rather rare occasion for us. And while it is exciting and loads of fun, it is also a ton of work. Oh, how I am praying for a normal school day tomorrow
The white bread from “Tuesdays with Dorie” was so delicious that I was asked to make another round. Turns out the family isn’t the only one that likes it. 1st recipe is definitely a keeper. Not so sure about the next round.
I decided to glance at the next recipe we are to make on TWD and it’s “Chocolate Truffle Tartlets” on page 382. Wow, talk about taking it up a notch.
There is some definite homework here for me to get ready for this type of ”over my head” recipe. First to consider is what kind of chocolate to use? This one decision alone could probably make or break this amazing recipe and since I have not baked anything like this before I would sure love any/all suggestions. 2nd homework piece is that the recipe calls for Biscotti. I have never in my life made Biscotti, have you? Well, it looks like that is next on my “things to bake” so that I can actually have the ingredients I need to make the tartlet. I don’t recall anybody mentioning that this whole “Baking with Julia” could get so complicated!
But I am up for the challenge and I hope you are too… I am determined to learn to bake and blog in 2012!
Good Morning! Well, here is my 1st go at White Bread from the “Baking with Julia by Dorie Greenspan” book. Thank goodness bread is not extremely difficult to make, so it’s a great place to begin. Simple wholesome ingredients (5 to be exact) plus time = Yummy Bread! The upside to bread is that no matter how it turns out you have the fresh smell of bread in your house. This alone is worth it for me. The downside to bread is that while simple it can be a bit fussy. With THIS recipe there was none of that. Yeah!
I didn’t have the 8.5 x 4.5 loaf pans suggested so I improvised and used a bit larger pan. This produced larger loaves but they were not as tall as I had hoped. Darn! Not sure what to do about this as I really don’t want to buy 2 new pans. By far the biggest lesson learned was using a thermometer to test the bread! Who has ever heard of that? Sure enough, 200 degress produced a perfectly baked bread. I wonder if this applies to all breads or just this recipe?
One last note… Katya on the Tuesdays with Dorie blog left a nifty comment about making cinnamon swirl bread. Just the name sounded heavenly! I had to try it. Good, but the results could have been fantastic! Clearly I didn’t use enough cinnamon sugar filing to do it justice. Note to self… You can NEVER use to much Cinnamon Suger. Back to the kitchen to try again… at least I get to eat my mistakes
My much anticipated Amazon order arrived today. Oh, how I love getting packages! Especially this one, with my “Baking with Julia” Book. Two of my New Years resolutions were to adventure into the world of blogging and to bake weekly. It still amazes me that I can do both at the same time. Thanks to a Goggle search I found “Tuesdays with Dorie” and that got the whole ball rolling. I now have a Blog and a Cookbook and a whole lot of learning to do. How to post a picture and link up other Blogs and make White Bread are just a few of my To-Do’s this week. If anyone has suggestions, tips or tutorials they can send me, they are ALL welcome. Thanks!
Happy 2012 and Welcome to my brand new Blog! I am excited to be starting a new journey with you. Who knows where we are headed exactly but you know what they say…A journey of a 1000 miles starts with just one step and for me, this is that step. I am completely new to blogging and all social media, so please bear with me, but I figured it was time to jump in and see what it was all about. That, and I wanted to check out and fully participate in the program “Tuesdays with Dorie” where a group of people bake their way through Dorie’s book “Baking with Julia”. Now, that sounds like some serious fun to bake your way through a year. So here I am… It’s a brand new day, and a brand new year and I would love to spend it with you, creating all kinds of mischief as we bake, knit, sew, scrapbook, pray, and declutter ourselves silly. Although not necessarily in that order!
